Functional Surfaces Laboratory

The laboratory is equipped with the necessary instruments for the surface analysis of materials from textural, microstructural, mineralogical and chemical-physical points of view.
In particular, it is possible to assess the surface performance of the materials such as for example:

1. Photocatalysis

  • Degradation of methylene blue (ISO 10678)
  • Removal of NOx (ISO 22197-1)
  • Removal of acetaldehyde (ISO 22197-2)
  • Removal of toluene (ISO 22197-3)
  • Measurement of water contact angle (ISO 27448)

2. Antibacterial

  • Determination of the resistance to the growth of bacteria (ISO 27447)
  • Determination of the mildew colonisation degree

3. Reflectance

  • Measurement of reflectance spectra for determining the Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) according to ASTM E1980-11, in compliance with LEED 2009 NC Rating System and reference guide (US-GBC), LEED category: SUSTAINABLE SITES (SS CREDIT 7.1, HEAT ISLAND EFFECT: non-roof; SS CREDIT 7.2, HEAT ISLAND EFFECT: roof).Given the increasing importance of this parameter for the LEED certification, to qualify the building materials from the point of view of the reduction of the “heat island effect”, the Ceramic Centre has created a ““SRI Package”, which provides for the determination of Solar Reflectance Index on 5 products, at particularly favourable costs.
  • Colour measurements: determination of the colorimetric coordinates (L, a, b) and colour differences (DLab, DCab and DHab DECMC)
  • Determination of LRV parameter (Light Reflectance Value) and colour differences (DLab, Da and Db) according to ASTM C609-07 and BS 8300:2009

4. Slip resistance

  • Determination of the slip resistance according to the main national and international standards
  • Evaluation of the presence and effectiveness of anti-slip treatments applied to the surface
  • Assessment of any performance variation, following surface treatments applied to the anti-slip surface (chemical resistance, staining, brilliance …)

5. Cleanability

  • Assessment of the presence of polymeric treatments
  • Staining tests
  • Chemical resistance tests

6. Brilliance or gloss

By means of the 3d non contact profilometer Leica DCM 3D it is possible to determine the surface roughness parameters and, in many cases, the thickness of functional coatings.
