Flowsorb for the determination of the specific surface

The specific surface of granular solids, powders or porous materials is the surface area per unit mass expressed in m2/g. It is determined with the aim to obtain a more deep knowledge of the material to be characterised. By the extent of the specific surface of powders, it is possible to obtain a useful indication of the level of reactivity that they will have in the different processes to which they will be subjected, in particular during sintering.
On sintered products, instead, this parameter provides information about the densification degree.

Technical features of the instrument

The laboratory is equipped with the instrument Flowsorb II 2300, Micromeritics (USA), which determines the specific surface by a method using a continuous flow of adsorbent gas mixed with an inert gas, on a sample kept at atmospheric pressure. The measurement is based on the determination of the amount of adsorbed gas (a mixture of nitrogen and helium) as a monomolecular layer on the analysed sample.
Measurements of the specific surface – single point BET method may be carried out on samples with specific surface values of 0.01 m2/g to over 1000 m2/g.
