The new ISO standard was presented at Cersaie on Sept. 30th, during a dedicated conference.
Andrea Contri of Confindustria Ceramica, Manager and Coordinator of the working group that developed the Standard, illustrated the structure of the standard and the various indicators of the sustainability rating; Maria Chiara Bignozzi, Director of Centro Ceramico and Professor at DICAM-Unibo, carried out an example of real application of the standard to the average Italian production of tiles; finally Marco Mari, President of GBC Italia, analyzed the potential role of the new standard within building rating systems.
The Standard ISO 17889-1:2021 “Ceramic tiling systems – Sustainability for ceramic tiles and installation materials – Part 1: Specification for ceramic tiles” – published in June 2021 – identifies the sustainability requirements for ceramic tiles according to environmental, economic and social criteria, and allows designers and end users to choose the products that can contribute most to the sustainability of buildings.
