It was founded in 1976 in Bologna and in 2000 an office in Sassuolo was added.

Since October 2022, Centro Ceramico has been operating in two locations both in Sassuolo (Via Valle d’Aosta 1 and Via Vittime XI Settembre 2001, 25 / P / Q), in the heart of the Ceramic District.
The laboratories have equipment for certification and marking tests, analysis and characterization of traditional and advanced ceramic materials.

Also in 2022, the joint LAB SMILE laboratory was inaugurated, between DICAM (University of Bologna) and the CERAMIC CENTER, which deals with research and consultancy activities for companies in the field of MATERIAL SUSTAINABILITY.

The Ceramic Center is made up of 14 staff units, which include researchers, technicians and administrative staff.

The Director of the Ceramic Center is Prof. Maria Chiara Bignozzi of the University of Bologna (DICAM Department) and the previous Directors were Prof. Giorgio Timellini (2006-2014) and Prof. Carlo Palmonari (1976-2006).

Since June 2011, the Ceramic Center has been the Industrial Research Laboratory of the High Technology Network of Emilia Romagna (see Regional Accreditation Certificate), it is associated with Clust-ER Build and Clust-ER Greentech. It is also a member of the ECTP – Innovative Built Environment Platform.
